School meals help our kids be ready to function, learn and succeed

School nutrition programs play a massive role supporting kids through school meals, food pantries and much more.

Seventy-five years ago, President Harry S. Truman signed the National School Lunch Act, forming the National School Lunch Program — which in turn paved the way for the creation of other programs like school breakfast, after-school meals, summer meals and more.

This year, school nutrition programs are more important than ever.

The pandemic has wreaked havoc on the economic stability of many families across the country, and this fall hundreds of thousands of children across the nation — including 1 in 5 right here in Michigan — could struggle with hunger.

Many of these same children are also working through the trauma of the past year, and seeking support from their school system to overcome it.
