At first glance, any of the top-ranked BCAA supplements look similar. They all contain similar doses of identical ingredients. After all, there are only 20 amino acids.

Once you look beneath the surface, however, you can quickly spot differences between good and bad BCAA supplements. We separated the best and worst BCAA supplements using the following metrics:

BCAA Dosage: Most BCAA supplements contain a dosage of around 5g to 15g per serving, with most BCAA supplements falling somewhere in the middle. We avoided supplements with lower-than-average dosages.

In this 2012 study, for example, researchers found that BCAA supplements reduced exercise-induced muscle damage in resistance-trained males. Researchers gave BCAA supplements or a placebo to men in a randomized, double-blind, placebo controlled setting. Researchers found that BCAA supplements taken before and after a workout significantly reduced soreness. Similarly, this 2006 study showed that BCAAs activate key enzymes in protein synthesis after physical exercise. In this 2003 study, researchers found that BCAAs helped control blood sugar swings by stimulating insulin-independent glucose uptake in skeletal muscle cells.
